1.To begin with, you need to generate UPC (Unique Porting Code) by sending SMS to 1900. UPC is an alphanumeric code allocated, upon request, by a mobile operator to its subscriber for the purpose of facilitation of porting of his/her mobile number to another operator.
 • SMS to be sent : PORT <your Mobile Number> to 1900. Operator SMS charges will be applicable.
• Eg. SMS PORT 98XXXXXXXX to 1900

2.After sending SMS to 1900, you will receive UPC (Unique Porting Code) as a SMS from 1901 giving 8 digit alpha-numeric Unique Porting Code (UPC) and UPC expiry date in MM/DD/YYYY format

3.Visit your nearest airtel outlet / showroom

4.Fill airtel Mobile Number Porting (MNP) form providing details like
 • Current Mobile Number
• Current Operator name
• UPC code

5.Submit Address & Id proof documents, self-attested photo and last bill copy of postpaid connection (if applicable) along-with filled MNP form and Customer Agreement Form.

6.Buy the airtel MNP SIM card from airtel outlet / showroom. SIM charges, talktime value and porting charge are non-refundable in the event of cancellation / rejection of port-in request.

7.airtel will send an SMS on your old/existing operator’s SIM (existing connection) intimating about the porting date and time, i.e. the date and approximate time till when you can continue to use your existing operator’s SIM card.

8.There will be a 2-hour ‘no service period’ which will begin after the porting time as given above. The ‘no service period’ will be between 12 midnight to 5 am during which your mobile service will not be active on any SIM. All efforts will be made to ensure that this ‘no service period’ causes minimum inconvenience to you.

9.After the ‘no service period’, you can replace your existing operator’s SIM card with the new airtel SIM card in your handset.

Mobile Number Portability – How to change your Mobile Operator


Today, a New scheme is activated that will permit mobile phone users to change their service providers without having to forgo their numbers in what in industry jargon is called mobile number portability. This is available all on All india Basis.
So If you are not happy with your current operator, then you now the option to switch

  • Porting Charge only up to Rs. 19/-
  • Porting time: 7 working days (15 working days in case of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East service areas)
In the interest of consumers TRAI has also specified that service disruption time shall not exceed 2 hours, that too during night time.
Request for Porting
  • Contact the new mobile service provider to whom you want to port your mobile number.
  • Obtain Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) & Porting Form.
  • Read the eligibility and other conditions carefully.
  • If eligible, obtain ‘Unique Porting Code‘ by sending an SMS from the mobile number you want to port to the number ‘1900’ with text ‘PORT‘ followed by space followed by your 10 digit mobile number you want to port.
  • Fill up the CAF and Porting Form.
  • Submit the duly filled Porting Form and CAF along with requisite documentary proof to the mobile service provider.
  • If you are a post paid subscriber, submit a paid copy of the last bill issued along with Porting Form and CAF.
  • Obtain new SIM card from the new service provider
You can withdraw your porting request within 24 hrs of applying.
Activation of ported number:
  • Your new mobile service provider will intimate you the date & time of porting on your mobile phone.
  • Replace the old SIM with the new SIM provided by your new mobile service provider after the specified date and time.
Eligibility and Other Conditions
  • You are allowed to move to another mobile service provider only after 90 days of the date of activation of your mobile connection or from the date of last porting of your mobile number, which ever is applicable.
  • You are allowed to change mobile service provider within the same service area only.
  • If you are a postpaid subscriber, please ensure that you have paid all the dues as per your last bill (You will have to sign an undertaking in the Porting Form also).
  • If you are a Pre-paid Subscriber, please note that the balance amount of talk time, if any, at the time of porting will lapse.

Q. What is a UPC code?

A. UPC code is an 8 digit Unique porting code which you will be required to provide to New Operator at the time of switching.

Q. Will there be any disconnection of services in this process?

A. Your number will be functional throughout this process. The switchover will happen between 10 pm to 5 am to ensure your connectivity is not disrupted. However there will be a 2 hour span between 10 pm to 5 am when your services may be disrupted, this exact time would be communicated to you in advance.

Q. Do I have to replace my SIM card?

A. Yes. you will get new sim from operator you are switching to.

Q. I have CDMA, can I port to a GSM operator?

A. Yes but you will get to change your handset because CDMA handset does not work for GSM.
